Check Your Equipment Before Filling the Tank

A drop in pressure, uneven spray pattern, or inconsistent flow could point to a clogged filter, worn pump component, hose restriction, spray tip issue, or another problem within the system.
Continuing to spray without identifying the cause can waste material. An operator may slow down or repeatedly pass over the same area because the spray pattern does not look right. That can result in inconsistent coverage and unnecessary product use.
Instead, stop and determine what has changed.
Keeping pumps, filters, hoses, and spray components in good condition makes application more predictable. When the equipment performs consistently, the operator has a much better idea of how much material is being applied.
Be Careful When Transferring Sealcoat
Not all sealcoat waste happens during application. Material transfers are another opportunity for spills and unnecessary losses.
Whether you are transferring material from a bulk storage tank or filling a skid or trailer, inspect the transfer equipment first. Check connections and valves, make sure hoses are positioned securely, and know how much capacity remains in the receiving tank.
Never assume there is enough room for another transfer.

If you regularly handle larger commercial properties, having sufficient tank capacity can reduce the need for repeated material handling and transfers. For smaller jobs, however, loading far more material than you expect to use may leave you managing unnecessary leftover sealcoat at the end of the day.
Estimate the pavement area before the job and understand the expected coverage of the material you are using. Manufacturer recommendations should always be followed when determining application rates.
Better estimates make it easier to decide how much sealcoat should go into the tank in the first place.
Clean Equipment with the Next Job in Mind
Cleanup is not just about making equipment look better. It can affect how efficiently your sealcoating system uses material the next time it goes to work.
Material that is allowed to build up inside spray tips, filters, hoses, valves, or other components can restrict flow. On the next job, your crew may spend time trying to compensate for equipment that is not spraying properly.
Follow the appropriate cleaning procedures for your equipment and the sealcoat material you use. While cleaning, inspect components for wear, damage, or buildup that could cause problems later.
This is also a good opportunity to identify parts that should be replaced before the next job rather than discovering the problem after the tank is loaded.
